A better first step

Not every old book is ready for recycling.

A worn cover, an outdated subject, or a crowded shelf does not always mean a book has reached the end of its useful life. Pickup gives the collection a chance to be sorted first.

What happens after pickup?

Book recycling can be the right destination for books that are badly damaged, incomplete, moldy, or otherwise unsuitable for continued use. The difficulty is knowing which books belong in that category. CNY Book Rescue collects unwanted books and reviews them after pickup rather than asking residents to make every decision one title at a time.

Books that remain useful may be resold or donated so they can reach another reader. Books that cannot reasonably be reused are responsibly recycled. No particular outcome can be promised for an individual book, but sorting first helps prevent usable material from being discarded unnecessarily.

Our standard pickup service is free within our normal Central New York service area. We serve communities from Herkimer County to Cayuga County, including Syracuse, Utica, Rome, Auburn, Oneida, Herkimer, and Liverpool, along with many nearby towns. You can box the books, tell us where they are located, and request a convenient pickup instead of loading them into your own vehicle.

When to request book pickup

Pickup is useful when you are clearing bookshelves, moving, downsizing, handling an estate, or sorting a collection that has accumulated over many years. It can also help when local recycling instructions are unclear or when a large number of heavy books would be difficult to transport.

Tell us approximately how many books you have and describe their general condition in the pickup form. Acceptance depends on type and condition, and exceptionally large or out-of-area requests may require advance discussion. Any unusual cost would be agreed upon before scheduling.

CNY Book Rescue is not a municipal recycling program. We are a local book pickup service that gives reusable books an opportunity to remain in circulation and sends unsuitable material toward responsible recycling.
